OUR MISSION:

"SERVING THE NEEDS OF THE UNDERSERVED"

We will be departing March 27th, 2010, on our annual medical missionary trip to the Dominican Republic with 45 medical students and 11 volunteer physicians to provide education, dental care and medical care. This year marks our 8th annual trip.

Medical Students in Action is a group of University of Miami Miller School of Medicine medical students and volunteer physicians who are dedicated to serving the impoverished people in rural areas of the Dominican Republic. We currently serve the villages of Hoyes de Niza, Las Cabirmas, Los Botaos and Rancho al Medio in the San Cristobal region.

Your financial contribution, no matter how small, will help us provide the necessary medicines and medical supplies we need to sustain continuity of care.

As a group of medical students and professionals, we use our collective knowledge and skills to focus on the health needs of the communities we serve. MSA provides treatment for common illnesses such as malnutrition, poor dentition, scabies, STDs, hypertension, anemia, fungal infections, and parasitic infections due to lack of sanitation. Thanks to our generous donors, we are able to offer medications at no cost for all of these illnesses.

MSA believes that more than just medicine is needed to improve the long-term health of the people we serve. Consequently MSA strives to educate the population regarding the causes of these illnesses and the appropriate preventive measures that can be taken.

MSA has been working with the local government to ensure access to medicines for all at the local clinic. We are also working with engineers to find ways to bring fresh water to the thousands of people who live there. MSA is also expanding existing maternal and child health education programs and making infrastructural improvements on local schools.

MSA is moving closer to achieving its goal of establishing a permanent clinic and employing local community health workers to improve the quality of health in this region. Dr. Deyarnira, a local Dominican physician, has agreed to provide monthly follow up care for our patients with chronic illnesses at a more permanent clinic in Los Botaos. This past January, MSA sent Dr. Deyarnira the first shipment of medications and supplies to stock the clinic’s pharmacy.

MSA is also proud to announce the implementation of an electronic patient records database. This database will allow our organization to provide more continuity of care on our mission trips and track our patients’ improvements.
