Our Community Health Worker Program

Our newest project has been working on developing a community health worker program in the village of Los Hoyos, Dominican Republic. We launched the program on December 26, 2010 when four of our students went down, on a side trip from the annual MSA trip, to educate 'Promotoras de Salud' (community health workers) on important health topics such as hygiene, nutrition, first aid, trauma, controlling and preventing diabetes and hypertension, pre and postnatal care, STDs and caring for the ill in the community when a doctor and medications may not be available.

The community health workers are people of the community that were chosen by their own as leaders who have continuously shown compassion to others. Their role will be to learn and to educate the people of the village using a main resource we have provided for them ('Where There is No Doctor' handbook by David Werner) along with the instruction we, MSA, and local doctors will provide for them on yearly visits.. We see this program as a means for the villages that we visit annualy to be able to prevent certain conditions and diseases from spreading, worsening and also allow them to control certain medical situations when there are no doctors near.
